What are black holes?

Black holes are objects which are so dense that they’ve collapsed under their own weight. Their gravity is so strong that nothing can escape from them if it gets close enough, including light.

Our rules about gravity can’t describe what happens at their centre, so we don’t know for sure what’s inside them.
