How do we know how warm it was in the past?

For the last few centuries scientists have been actively recording weather reports all over the planet. Especially on ships – their logs contain detailed records, which are still held in archives.

For older temperatures, we can make estimates from things like tree growth (from their rings we can tell how fast they were growing in the past).
